Minecraft Buzz-off game

Took a different slant this year with the buzz-off game and decided to go with a theme: Minecraft.
Trying to integrate wiring and hide electronic components is always a challenge so we tried laminating and cutting groves to hide wires etc. It worked a treat. Some of the student projects turned out so well and they really got involved in the whole process from start to finish.

I love giving students a challenge and seeing what they come up with! This is just a little clip of a scotch yolk mechanism. You gotta love it!

6th Technology

Knife Holders

I love this one. Starting the term off with a practical exercise based on a shield for holding knives. The students came up with some interesting designs, especially the rotating knife thrower.

Starting of the school year with a quick glance at some of the projects students finished off towards the end of May. Great work and some very interesting designs.

EA Games Robotic Games Ireland

Sumo Robot and Line Following GP competitions

Villiers school emerged as overall national champions and runners up in the mini sumo robot competition retaining the title for the second year in succession.

Our students battled it out, with two of the teams reaching the final. It was bitter sweet seeing them take on each other in the final, as Eoghan Campion and Darragh Vandenberg took on Ethan Dolan’s sumo robot who eventually went on to victory.

Adding to that success, Daniel Farushev then won the inaugural open sumo robot tournament in superb form.  This competition has no limitations on the design, components and programming of the robots.

To cap off the day, Laura Holubowicz and Sinead O’Donnel-Stloz took part in the line following GP and F1 competitions taking 1^st and 2^nd place respectively. Their robot independently navigated a grand Prix style track clocking the fastest time on the day.

It was a huge success for all the students who took part on the day and it was thoroughly enjoyable to see them come away with so many honours. Congratulations to all.

5th Year Technology

Night Lights

Students present their night light projects using a Genie c08 microcontroller. This is a lovely little project which allows students to get to grips with programming a basic microcontroller and sets them up for the coming challenge of programming their sumo robots. Lots of technology used here, from CADCAM to vacuum forming and laminating plywood and acrylic to give some unique effects when these lights shine.

Some Leaving Certificate animatronic projects. A superb job was done on all projects by 6th year students this year who had to design and make a system or artefact based on the theme of animatronics. For the moment, here are the pictures but I'll be updating them soon with videos to follow.

 

EA Games Irish Sumo Robot Competition

Sumo Robots

On the 20th May 2016 Villier's Technology Sumo Robots battled it out in the Irish EA Sumo Robot Games and were victorious. Team Cortex (Ben Crowley) came out on top beating over 150 other sumo robots from all over Ireland to win the Junior EA Games Sumo Robot Competition. It was a great day and our team of nine robots did superbly well. It culminated in a tense final against "The Wall" from St. Gerald's College, Castlebar. In the end there could only be one winner and having come so close in previous years, this turned out to be our year in the end.

Tech Week

It was a very exciting and enjoyable technology week in Villiers. Students experienced and engaged in activities which included exploring environments in virtual reality, drone technology, robotics and gesture motion control technologies. Our new addition to the staff, Vill the robot, concluded the week by overseeing our Aeroplane design and fly competition. It proved to be a great success and we look forward to seeing what new technologies await us next year.

Sketching

It's always a challenge to teach students drawing and sketching techniques. While I do my best to try and impart my knowledge of sketching, there are so many great resources online that students are able to watch and learn from the best. Here are some of their efforts.

Lamps

Transition year is a great opportunity to explore design and be creative. This has without doubt been accomplished in the superb form of the lamp in the picture below. Taking raw wood in the inspiring form of a dog and recreating that scene in painted form is inspiring.
